Minimum Wall Thickness for 3D Prints
By Dynafabs
Minimum wall thickness and feature size for 3D prints: practical FDM and resin rules so thin walls, text and pins survive when you order from Dynafabs.
Thin walls look great in CAD. On a real printer they can warp, tear when supports come off, or vanish into a single wobbly strand. Getting minimum wall thickness and feature size right is one of the quickest ways to turn a fragile model into a reliable part.
Here are the practical rules we use at Dynafabs when quoting FDM and resin jobs — so you can check your file before you send a quote.
Why thickness rules exist
FDM printers lay down a bead of molten plastic roughly as wide as the nozzle — commonly 0.4 mm. A wall thinner than one bead cannot print as drawn. A one-bead wall is weak, easy to scar with supports, and sensitive to cooling.
Resin printers resolve finer detail, but hair-thin pins and unsupported sheets still snap in the wash or when supports come off. “As thin as CAD allows” is rarely the right target.
FDM: useful starting numbers
Starting points for a typical 0.4 mm nozzle — not hard laws. Tell us if a face must stay sharp or load-bearing.
| Feature | Suggested minimum | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | | Vertical wall (cosmetic) | 0.8–1.2 mm (2–3 perimeters) | Two walls are the practical floor for PLA/PETG shells | | Vertical wall (structural) | 1.6–2.4 mm or more | Add ribs where bolts or clips pull | | Horizontal floor / roof | 1.0–1.2 mm | Thin roofs can pillow or gap | | Embossed / engraved text | 0.5 mm+ stroke, 0.3–0.5 mm depth | Finer text needs a smaller nozzle or resin | | Pins, bosses, pegs | ≥ 2–3 mm diameter | Prefer heat-set inserts for screws | | Holes | ≥ 1.5–2 mm clear | Drill after print for precision |
Prefer at least two perimeters. Material matters: PLA holds fine detail; PETG is tougher but stringier; ABS, ASA and nylon shrink more so thin tall walls can warp — see our materials comparison and materials page. Flexible TPU often needs thicker walls for the same feel.
Resin: finer, not invincible
Resin suits tabletop minis from original or properly licensed designs, jewellery masters and small detailed props.
- Walls: about 0.8–1.0 mm for hollow shells that must survive wash and cure
- Detail: raised features around 0.3 mm often read clearly
- Pins: keep them short or thicken the root — resin snaps when bent
Hollow parts need drain holes. Mention hollow intent on the quote form if you have already shelled the model.
Design habits that save thin parts
1. Ribs instead of solid slabs — lighter, stiffer, faster to print 2. Fillets at roots — blunt stress risers where thin walls meet a base 3. Avoid one-bead logos — raise text enough for a clean path, or use resin 4. Check scale — wrong STL units turn 2 mm into 0.2 mm (file prep checklist) 5. Orient for strength — layer bonds are the weak plane (orientation)
For mating parts, use our tolerances guide. If supports will touch thin faces, see supports and overhangs.
What to tell Dynafabs on the quote
- Which walls are structural versus cosmetic
- Sanded, painted or as-printed? (finishing)
- Material and any heat or outdoor needs (outdoor materials)
- “Thicken thin walls if needed” if you want a safe edit suggested
Upload your STL or 3MF at dynafabs.uk/quote. If something looks too thin for the process you asked for, we will say so before we print.
FAQ
Can you print a 0.4 mm wall? On FDM that is usually one nozzle width — fragile. We generally recommend thickening unless you accept a prototype-only part.
Does a smaller nozzle fix everything? A 0.2 mm nozzle resolves finer detail at the cost of time. It does not make a skinny beam strong.
Same rules as injection moulding? No. Moulded parts often run thinner because pressure fills the cavity. Additive builds are driven by bead width, layer bonding and support removal.
Carbon-fibre blends? Great for brackets, less forgiving of hair-thin features — see our nylon / CF guide.
